Job Purpose

This role provides clinical leadership to our work to embed continuous Quality Improvement techniques for a structured and evidence-based approach to veterinary care.

The Quality Improvement Clinical Lead will be visible and proactive in engaging the wider veterinary community in Quality Improvement concepts and practices, fostering a culture open to analysis, change and improvement.

The postholder will play a crucial role in delivering Quality Improvement education to equip veterinary teams with practical ways to embed Quality Improvement, and in promoting RCVS Knowledge’s free and charged-for resources within the veterinary professions.

This role is ideal for a well-networked individual who is passionate about advancing Quality Improvement in veterinary healthcare through education and collaboration.

 

Key responsibilities:

  1. Act as a visible thought-leader on Quality Improvement, patient safety, clinical human factors and the principles and associated themes of Quality Improvement.
  2. Develop collaborations and foster positive working relationships with others in the industry to transform conversations into action to drive forward our work to embed Quality Improvement in practice
  3. Work with others in the team to position RCVS Knowledge as the go-to place for veterinary teams to find the knowledge, skills and tools they need to continuously improve the quality of veterinary care.
  4. Initiate, develop, and deliver a mix of free and charged-for continuing professional development (CPD) for the whole veterinary team on Quality Improvement. Gather feedback to show impact and to continuously improve to meet the evolving needs of the veterinary profession. 
  5. Create, adapt and refine educational materials and Quality Improvement resources, working with the Quality Improvement Advisory Board for review and approval.
  6. Take ownership for the commercial viability and success of our charged-for Quality Improvement training, drawing on knowledge of the veterinary industry to inform the development of marketing strategies.
  7. Build strong relationships with veterinary practices and organisations to encourage uptake of training packages and usage of our resources. 
  8. Work with educational institutions to embed Quality Improvement systematically in undergraduate and postgraduate curricula.
  9. Maintain a good working knowledge of all aspects of the organisation and take every opportunity to raise awareness of RCVS Knowledge outputs.
  10. Horizon scan for opportunities and risks.
  11. Maintain excellent working relationships both internally and externally, with effective two-way communication and organisation.
  12. Ensure materials are evidence-based in collaboration with the Library and Information Service team.
  13. Undertake training and professional development relevant to the role.
  14. Contribute to the wider activities of RCVS Knowledge, performing any other duties aligned with the objectives of the post, as appropriate.

 

Education and experience:

Essential:

  • MRCVS with experience of leading and implementing Quality Improvement approaches in practice
  • Experience of delivering training and CPD, and of speaking at conferences
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Strong collaborator, with experience of developing effective relationships with external stakeholders and working in partnership with others
  • Well-developed networks in the veterinary sector, with the ability and willingness to proactively engage in on- and off-line conversations relevant to your work
  • Experience in writing articles for the veterinary press/journals
  • Understanding of evidence-based veterinary medicine principles
  • Good knowledge of the RCVS Codes of Professional Conduct for Veterinary Surgeons and Veterinary Nurses and their associated guidance
  • Good knowledge of the Practice Standards Scheme
  • Proven ability to manage workload and priorities effectively

 

Desirable:

  • Recent experience of working in practice
  • A teaching or coaching qualification
  • Experience in leading collaborative efforts, working with advisory groups or committees
  • Experience in providing training and CPD in clinical governance and Quality Improvement
  • Experience of marketing or selling education or training
  • An established and responsive online presence

 

Person specification

You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, sound judgement and credibility with the peers and audiences with which you interact. You will be practically minded and realistic in your approach with a presentation/training/writing style that brings theoretic material to life with applicable examples. You will be diplomatic and tactful. You will work effectively with colleagues to get the best results. You will be persuasive and passionate about Quality Improvement, veterinary care, veterinary practice and customer service; however, you will have a grounded understanding of the barriers and facilitators in which this work operates. You will be positive, constructive, self-motivated and results driven. You will be in-touch with relevant hot topics and political or contextual developments within the profession. You will be agile and responsive to changes and developments, while still being committed to supporting veterinary teams with a consistent approach to Quality Improvement.
