* Please note we require the successful candidate to attend at least 1 day per week in the London office (Flexibility to attend the office more regularly on occasion may be required to meet business needs) *

 

Job purpose

The purpose of the Assistant Editor is to manage manuscripts from submission through to publication in Veterinary Evidence, and to provide editorial support to internal and external editors, authors and reviewers. This position is vital to ensuring journal content is processed within suitable timeframes and according to journal policies and processes. The post will also contribute to events and other programmes of work in RCVS Knowledge.

 

Key responsibilities

 

Editorial:

  • Manage article manuscripts from submission through to production, via the journal’s workflow and processes
  • Undertake quality checks on submissions to ensure manuscripts are of a satisfactory standard to proceed to the editorial process
  • Ensure that peer reviews, revisions, and decisions are on schedule by working closely with the Editor-in-chief, Associate Editors, peer reviewers and authors
  • Keep authors informed about the status of their paper
  • Ensure that articles adhere to journal policies and publication ethics during the editorial process
  • Build and maintain relationships with the editorial team, and internal and external stakeholders
  • Correspond with editors, authors and peer reviewers
  • Commission selected Knowledge Summaries and clinical queries

 

Production:

  • Copyedit and proof accepted papers
  • Create and publish HTML and PDF galleys

 

General:

  • Collaborate with communications staff to promote the journal
  • Develop or contribute to blog posts, podcasts, and other content to help promote and increase usage of journal content.
  • Contribute to the agenda and management of Editorial board meetings
  • Monitor publishing timelines and work with the Managing Editor, the editorial team, and other staff to identify and address issues or areas of improvement
  • Participate in and support conferences and symposia
  • Provide input or support to projects with teams within RCVS Knowledge
  • Other duties as required and commensurate with the post but not described above

 

Skills, aptitudes and motivations

 

  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks to deadlines
  • Familiarity with the process of online journal publishing
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Excellent writing, editing, research, and communications skills
  • Customer service oriented
  • Ability to communicate respectfully and tactfully

 

Education and/or experience

 

Essential:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • At least two years of relevant experience
  • Experience of working with article submission and editorial management systems
  • Experience in creating HTML and PDFs

 

Desirable:

  • Scientific or medical background
  • Knowledge or experience of STM publishing
  • Experience of proofreading
